What to Bring When Buying a Car: A Complete Checklist

Buying a car is exciting—but showing up unprepared can cause delays and unnecessary stress. Whether you’re buying from us at Dream Work Automotive or any dealership, having the right documents and info on hand can help make your visit fast, smooth, and successful.

Here’s your complete checklist for what to bring when buying a car:

1. Valid Driver’s License

This confirms your identity and ensures you’re legally able to drive the vehicle. Make sure it’s not expired!

2. Proof of Insurance

You’ll need to show proof of active auto insurance before taking the vehicle home. If you're adding the new car to your policy, contact your provider ahead of time.

3. Payment Method

Depending on how you’re paying, bring one of the following:

• Cash or cashier’s check (if paying outright)
• Credit/debit card (for deposits)
• Loan approval paperwork (if financing through your bank or credit union)
• Down payment funds (if financing with us)

4. Recent Pay Stubs or Proof of Income

We may need to verify your income. Bring a few recent pay stubs, bank statements, or tax returns if you’re self-employed. Easiest to have this with you when walking in! (Less time here = More joy ride time in your new car!)

5. Proof of Residence

A current utility bill, lease agreement, or official mail can help verify your address if required by the lender or insurance company.

6. Trade-In Documents (If Applicable)

Bringing a vehicle to trade in? Don’t forget:

• Vehicle title or lien release
• Vehicle registration
• All keys/remotes
• Payoff information if you still owe on the car

7. Co-Buyer or Cosigner Info (If Needed)

If someone is co-signing with you, make sure they come along or are available with their documents, too.
